Albuquerque & New Mexico: Where History and Culture Meet

Most people don’t realize this, but New Mexico is older than Mexico itself. The name “New Mexico” was given in 1598, when Spanish explorers came in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold—inspired by the wealth of the Aztec (Mexica) Empire. They named this land “Nuevo México” not after the modern country of Mexico (which didn’t exist yet), but after the Aztecs, hoping to find a new empire.

Over time, New Mexico became part of Spain, then Mexico, then briefly tried to become its own nation, and finally became a U.S. state in 1912. Through all those changes, the people of this land carried forward their unique stories, traditions, and spirit.
